Greenroom’s multi-sensor fusion improving clarity and confidence at sea

Multi-sensor fusion now available in GAMA and Lookout+

At sea, having a multi-sensor approach to situational awareness gives you the most comprehensive and detailed view of what’s happening around your vessel. But with multiple sensors comes noise, complexity and ambiguity.

That’s where multi-sensor fusion comes in.

Without fusion, there’s duplicate detections visible, creating noise and ambiguity
With fusion, noise and ambiguity are reduced giving crew a clearer understanding of the environment around them

What is multi-sensor fusion?

Put simply, multi-sensor fusion is the ability to identify a single marine object and consolidate separate detections from multiple sensors into one fused track.

Different sensors contribute different strengths:

  • AIS – identity, range, velocity, and heading
  • Radar – range, motion tracking, all-weather performance
  • Optical vision (AI) – location, classification and detection of non-AIS / non-radar objects such as whales, debris, or small craft

Fusion combines these attributes to build a single, much richer, and more accurate understanding of the object than any sensor alone. Where multiple sensors give you more data, multi-sensor fusion gives you the source of truth.

Why does multi-sensor fusion matter?

Greenroom’s multi-sensor fusion strengthens navigation and perception in several critical ways:

  1. A single, high-confidence source of truth: All detections are combined into one fused object with strengthened classification and more accurate geolocation, reducing noise, confusion, and ambiguity.
  2. Safer, optimized navigation and collision avoidance: Instead of planning paths around three or four dispersed detections of the same object, autonomous or human navigators are able to navigate around the single, fused object. With an optimized path, fuel burn is reduced and emissions minimized.
  3. Maintained tracking continuity: As an object moves between camera fields of view or when sensors intermittently drop out, fusion ensures that tracking is maintained.
  4. Fewer false positives, fewer nuisance alerts: With multiple sources supporting each individual object’s detection, confidence is improved and false positives reduced.
  5. Lower cognitive load for crews: Operators no longer need to manually reconcile AIS symbols, radar tracks, and camera imagery. Displays become cleaner, simpler, and more trustworthy, supporting faster, better decisions.

Without fusion, GAMA is cluttered with multiple projections of the same vessel with varying accuracy
With fusion, GAMA can navigate more precisely with more accurate size, bearing and geolocation of objects

Fusion in GAMA and Lookout+

Both crewed and uncrewed vessels can optimize their paths to navigate safely and avoid collisions using single, strengthened source of truth for every object on the sea. Fusion is now available on select plans for both:

Lookout+ (AI Perception)

  • Reducing clutter on the Lookout+ UI by fusing AIS, radar, and optical detections into a single tracked object
  • Maintaining detection and classification as objects move across cameras
  • Back projection to display non-camera detections (AIS/radar) with bounding boxes when not visible to cameras

GAMA (Autonomy & Navigation)

  • Uses fused object tracks to generate safer, more efficient COLREGS-aware navigation paths
  • Reduces clutter on the GAMA UI by fusing AIS, radar, and optical detections into a single tracked object
  • Improves reliability in challenging environments such as cluttered harbors, offshore survey operations, and low-visibility conditions

Stronger situational awareness for real-world maritime operations

Greenroom’s multi-sensor fusion unlocks a clearer, cleaner, more reliable picture of the maritime environment which is the foundation of safe navigation and robust autonomy.

Whether for crewed bridge operations, optionally crewed missions, or fully autonomous deployments, fusion ensures every voyage is safer, more predictable, and better informed.
