As 2024 draws to a close, we at Greenroom Robotics find ourselves reflecting on a year defined by progress, partnerships, and purpose. From the projects we delivered, to the connections we strengthened, this year stands as proof of how our technology and partnerships are advancing the maritime sector in meaningful ways.
At the heart of everything we do, and will continue to do, is our mission to create safer and cleaner oceans by transforming maritime sectors through the ethical application of robotics, autonomous systems, and artificial intelligence (RASAI).
Growth That Shapes Our Future
Our growth in 2024 has gone beyond the great numbers—it has been about building the foundation of the strongest, most impactful organisation with global reach. Across both the east and west coasts of Australia, we’ve welcomed new talent, each specialising in areas such as autonomy, perception, mission management, and simulation. Their contributions have enriched our capabilities and positioned us to continue delivering cutting-edge solutions.
In Sydney, we outgrew our space and fitted out a brand-new open plan office with all the trimmings that a deep tech company could expect. On the west coast, we were proud to welcome Peter Baker, whose depth of experience in autonomous systems and offshore operations has driven our commercial growth and expanded our reach into new markets. We still love our heritage building (including an old bank safe) right in the heart of Fremantle on the west coast. Having a sci-fi space on the east and a heritage space on the west feels right for a company like ours while we’re working on transforming maritime sectors globally.
These milestones remind us that our greatest asset is our people—their creativity, expertise, and dedication continue to power everything we do.
One of the year’s achievements was our successful delivery of the Patrol Boat Autonomy Trial (PBAT). Conducted in partnership with the Royal Australian Navy’s Warfare Innovation Navy (WIN) Branch, Trusted Autonomous Systems, and Austal Australia, the PBAT demonstrated the feasibility of autonomous naval operations.
More than just a project, the PBAT demonstrated Greenroom’s methodical approach to validating autonomy. Starting with rapid scenario testing in our MIS-SIM simulation platform, we moved seamlessly into real-world trials. With GAMA and Lookout+ deployed aboard the 57m Sentinel, we completed rigorous Sea Acceptance Trials and a 1,305km Endurance Trial that showcased the reliability and potential of our technology in demanding, real-world environments - resulting in the successful deployment of Australia’s largest remotely operated and autonomous vessel!
Collaborative Innovation
The PBAT laid the groundwork for deeper collaboration with Austal, resulting in a strategic partnership aimed at developing solutions that reduce crewing, enhance safety, and enable autonomous and remote vessel operations.
This year, we also strengthened our partnership with Bureau Veritas, where we are jointly developing regulations for the use of autonomous systems in the defence sector. Together, we’re not just ensuring compliance but shaping the framework for safe, reliable autonomous operations.
Additionally, Greenroom partnered with UK-based SubSea Craft, a company specialising in the design and manufacture of advanced maritime platforms. This partnership represents an exciting opportunity to explore cutting-edge applications of autonomy in surface and subsurface environments, contributing to the advancement of innovative maritime technologies.
2024 was also a year of meaningful engagement with the maritime community. Greenroom and its team contributed insights and expertise at key industry events, sharing lessons learned and shaping the dialogue around maritime innovation.
Our CTO, Harry Hubbert, presented at The Royal Institution of Naval Architects Warship 2024: Future Surface Combatants Conference, addressing the challenges of large optionally crewed vessels and drawing on insights from the PBAT. Meanwhile, Peter Baker represented Greenroom Robotics at the AUKUS Masterclass, hosted by the University of Western Australia's Defence and Security Institute. Focused on advancing Pillar II objectives of the AUKUS partnership, the event featured Peter Baker on the WA Innovators Panel, where he discussed how the PBAT addressed regulatory and capability challenges critical to next-generation defence technologies.
The Indian Ocean Defence & Security Conference in Perth provided a unique opportunity to engage with industry leaders on our home turf, while attending AUSA in the United States allowed us to expand our reach and perspectives internationally. These events were invaluable for exchanging ideas, addressing challenges, and demonstrating how our RASAI technologies are shaping a safer, more sustainable maritime future.
Looking Back and Moving Forward
Reflecting on 2024, this year has been another step in our journey of growth; building on the momentum of last year’s achievements and setting the stage for even greater progress in 2025. Through growth, collaboration, and a relentless focus on innovation, Greenroom Robotics continues to expand its impact, creating value for our partners and the maritime sector as a whole.
As we look ahead to 2025, we are excited about the opportunities to come, confident in the direction we’re heading, and grateful for the trust of those who have supported us along the way.
Reflecting on the accomplishments of 2024 and the mission ahead, our CEO, James Keane, shared these thoughts:
"Transforming maritime sectors for safer and cleaner oceans requires belief, commitment, and an ability to apply the right solutions, in the right way, and at the right time. Seeing our software and teams solving challenges for clients in harsh maritime environments has brought many proud moments in 2024. Looking back, I’ve realized that there is nothing better than being part of a high-performing team focused on a good cause and making meaningful progress toward making the world a better place."
On behalf of everyone at Greenroom Robotics, we wish you a safe and happy holiday season. Here’s to another year of collaboration, progress, and meaningful impact in 2025.
